Andi Cook - BBb Bass

Andi started playing Eb bass with the old YBS junior band at the late age of 21, for no other reason than he was dating a cornet player in the band and got bored of hanging around at gigs. While that particular relationship didn’t last, a lifelong love of and bond with brass banding was forged. He got his first taste of contesting with Yorkshire Co-op band, where due to a strong low-register (and a fondness for ale and pies) he was encouraged to move to BBb bass, where he’s been ever since.

Spells at a number of Yorkshire bands followed the demise of Yorkshire Co-op band, including helping secure championship status with Wakefield Metropolitan, a section 1 area win with Hebden Bridge, and helping Hammonds Saltaire return to the British Open after a five year absence. He then spent time playing for Drighlington and Yorkshire Imperial, before crossing the Pennines and joining Milnrow.

Beyond playing, Andi is a keen writer and arranger for brass band, having written a number of concert items and commissions down the years. Foremost among those are solo commissions for the Grimethorpe Colliery band, for then Principal Cornet and Soprano players, Rob Westacott and Kevin Crockford, and bespoke items for the final two CDs by the famous James Shepherd Versatile Brass. More recently, original works by Andi were finalists at the Ohio brass arts festival and the Salford Composers competition, and he supplied the title track ‘Postcards from Holme’ for the Lindley Band’s CD of the same name.

Amongst all the works he’s scored for band though, the one he’s most fond of is the hymn setting of ‘Manchester’, which he wrote for the victims of the arena attack in 2017. It was premiered at the RNCM in Manchester by Sandy Smith’s all-star band ‘Tubular Brass’ the week after the attack, and went on to raise over £2000 for the associated charity fund via sheet music sales.
