2017 All England Masters International Champions
Jonny’s obsession with drumming began at the age of five when he visited the local hardware store with his dad and continuously hit the top of paint tins as if he was at a gig in Wembley Stadium!
At the age of 6 Jonny’s grandparents bought his first drum kit, and he began drum lessons with the renowned drum teacher Rhett Garrett. His first introduction to brass bands was joining Kingsway Youth Band where he spent the next 10 years playing with both the youth band and in his later years the senior band. At the same time, he was asked to represent Rochdale Youth Band in local, national & international concerts and competitions.
At the age of 16, Jonny took a break from Brass banding and concentrated on his busy schedule as a drummer in a local group that had caught the eye of many industry professionals. This gave the opportunity to play gigs the length and breadth of the British Isles, which he still actively does to this day.
Now at the age of 39 he has done well over 1500 gigs with many different groups including pop, rock, brass, blues bands, jazz ensembles, choirs, function bands, shows, plays and festivals etc.
Having gigged across the UK & Ireland, Jonny is soon set to tour Europe with his current band in the summer of 2018. Having worked with bands/artists including Tom Hingley (lead singer of the Inspiral Carpets) Gomez, Chris Wise & The Hidden Revolution, Kirk McElhinney, and many more, he has also worked with the BBC on numerous projects such as writing tracks for plays aired on BBC Radio 4 and playing live sessions on the radio at the BBC HQ in Manchester. He has recently been lucky enough to have some of his work played on TV programs such as Hollyoaks & Doctors, and in a recent film release ‘Hackneys Finest’ starring Nathaniel Wiseman, Enoch Frost & Neerja Naik.
Jonny has supported and played on the same bill as bands and artists such as Muse, Beverly Knight, Blossoms, Bloc Party, Primal Scream, UB40, Ocean Colour Scene, Slow Readers Club, Hudson Taylor, Hothouse Flowers and many more.
He has played on numerous demos and projects for bands and artists and has recorded at many studios in the UK, most recently finishing a recording with Chris Wise at the renowned Blue Print Studios in Manchester.
Brass Bands have played an integral part in Jonny’s musical career so far, having originally joined Milnrow Band back in 2000, and in early 2017 he re-joined the band to be a part of the team to help them continue in their current wonderful form in what has been the bands most successful year in history. He is very much looking forward to playing with the band at the British Open Championships in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and the prestigious Brass Band National finals at the Royal Albert Hall London later in 2017.
