2017 All England Masters International Champions
Matthew started playing by accident when taking his sister to her cornet lessons at Todmorden Community Brass. He was told that he may as well play if he was waiting for her, and has not looked back since, 12 years down the line.
He started through Todmorden training band on cornet and after a short stint in the senior band became principal euphonium. Matthew stayed on euph, going on to win contests with Elland Silver Youth band and Littleborough Brass Band.
Matthew was asked to go on to the principal cornet seat at Littleborough band, and stayed with them for a year. He was then invited to join Hebden Bridge band and qualified with them to move back up into the Championship section.
Matthew then went on to study music at the Royal Welsh College of Music under the tutorage of Christopher Turner. Throughout the year he played for Tongwynlais Temperance Band. After a year in Wales Matthew decided that he wanted to become a teacher and moved back up North.
After moving back to the heartland of Brass banding, Matthew had a successful and enjoyable 18 months with the Marsden Band before settling at Milnrow. Following a brief spell on rep, he was moved to strengthen the front row, where so far has had a fantastic run of results.
Matthew remains a full time member of the band alongside his primary teaching commitments and looks forward to a long and successful future with the band.
