2017 All England Masters International Champions
Dennis grew up on the West Coast of Cumbria, in a town called Workington.
As a teenager he took up tuba with the Flimby Saxhorn Silver Band where his love of brass bands flourished.
As his playing experience developed Dennis was offered a place in the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, where he gained valuable experience and made many long time friendships.
At the age of 18 he moved to Huddersfield University where he studied music and became a Music Teacher. During this time he played for many
of the Northwest and Yorkshire’s top brass bands.
Dennis began conducting in 1992 with Todmorden Old Brass Band and in 1994 he was invited by
United Northwest Co-op Band to conduct at the Albert Hall, commemorating 100 years of the cooperative movement. At this point Dennis decided to relinquish playing and concentrate on conducting, which had become his passion.
In 4 years, from 1995 to 1999, he took Todmorden through all the sections from 4th to Championship and Dennis gained a reputation for success in contesting, and more importantly concert work and rehearsing. In 2000 Todmorden won the Grand Shield at their first attempt and entered the British Open, only five years after languishing in the Yorkshire 4th section.
There followed a period of success with Todmorden and other bands on a local footing. In 2009, a break from banding for nine years began where Dennis studied and performed many different genres of music.
In September 2018, Milnrow band asked Dennis if he would like to be their Musical Director. There was no hesitation from Dennis, he accepted the post immediately commenting ‘to me this feels like the perfect match’.
Dennis is looking forward to a very bright and successful future with Milnrow Band, both on the concert platform and in the contesting field.
